Margin processes recordings on your Mac
Margin transcribes recordings and separates speakers on your Mac. It does not send audio, transcript text, note titles or speaker names to Pocket Renaissance or an AI service. It has no advertising, analytics or automatic crash-reporting service, and no Margin account is required.
Model downloads use the internet
On first use, Margin downloads public speech-model files from Hugging Face and its delivery providers. Those services receive your IP address and technical request details needed to deliver files, such as the requested model, file, and software request headers. Their service may retain request logs under its own policy. Margin disables the model library’s optional telemetry. The requests identify model files, not the content of your recordings.
The download provider’s handling of connection information is described in the Hugging Face privacy policy. Once the selected models are fully cached, transcription can run offline. Choosing a different model or restoring missing model files can require another download.
Saved files and permissions
Margin keeps transcript results, the source recording’s path, your edits, job settings and diagnostic logs in its local app storage. It also stores downloaded models and may retain a decoded working audio file for a job. These files can contain private information. Use How Margin works → Show local data to inspect the folder in Finder.
You choose which recording Margin may read and which folder it may write exports to. Saved folder permissions let you export again after reopening the app. The original recording is not modified. Importing an earlier library copies saved results and preserves the original library.
You choose where exports are saved. If you choose an iCloud Drive, Dropbox or other synced folder, that service can sync the exported files according to your settings. Margin does not control another app or service you use with an exported transcript. Exported JSON and recording details may include the original file path. Review them before sharing.
Your choices
There is no automatic upload of diagnostics. If you report a bug, share only the information you choose to send and review any logs before attaching them. You can inspect and manage local app files in Finder and exported files in the folder you selected. Back up any transcripts you want to keep before removing app data. No app data is automatically erased by cancelling a transcription.
